Progress?

Last night, until an hour much later than anticipated, the hubster and I attempted to hang the mirror over the sink, so I wouldn’t have to run all over the house to find the best light to put on moisturizer, make-up, or check my teeth for spinach.  We thought we were so clever, buying the Hercules hook with Billy Mays picture on the package from the internet, with expedited shipping because I didn’t want to wait another day to do my business in the bathroom mirror.  Sadly, we weren’t clever enough.  The hooks didn’t want to go in at first, and once they did, were not appropriate for this application.  So, instead of a mirror, we have two holes above the sink, waiting for the drywall hangers originally purchased for this purpose, which have since been misplaced.  It’s a comedy!

We do have a hand towel rack and a soap dish and a hook in the shower, however, so that’s something for you.

Also, no need to check your latest prescription on what I hope are some stylin’ spectacles, because, yes sir or ma’am, that tile is a little wonky.  Eighty year-old houses do not come square, but wavy, and with personality, like their crackers owner(s) {The hubster can add himself to the category, but I shall not speak for him in this case}.

Enjoy the long weekend!

I asked my friend Michael (Hello!  Are you there?) once, “How long have you been married?” And lightning quick, he replied, in a very deadpan voice, I might add, “One day longer than forever.”  Whatever feeling Michael may have had about his marriage, I’m still not sure, but I can tell you, for certain, where my bathroom is concerned, this is not an expression of joy or exultation.  No siree Bob.

Thanks be to the plumbing gods that we have a second bathroom, or I would be one very unhappy camper.  Which reminds me, have you watched the Jim Gaffigan yet?  In one of the videos he talks about camping (watch here), or rather his distaste for it.  Bellyache funny.  I love him.  He’s weird.

Anyhoo, back to my bathroom woes.  It’s taking one day longer than forever.  We are at the almost phase.  Almosts hinging upon each other.  I’ll bet you didn’t even know this was possible.  I sure didn’t, but here goes:

The cabinets are almost finished – one more layer of paint.  The counter top is almost finished – they just need the cabinets to be done.  The window trim is almost installed – they just need the guys working on the cabinets and counter top to finish.  The tile is almost finished – they just need the windows and counter top to be done.

After they’re done, I’ll have some peace and a very long, skin pruning bath, and won’t have to worry if someone is going to drop by the house while I’m nekkid or in the middle of a yoga posture to do something I forgot, or something they forgot, at least until the new windows arrive in five weeks.

In the mean time, here’s what it looks like now.  Ghostly, yet pretty, too.

Have a marvelous weekend!

Well, except the tub.  I cannot recall, at this moment, if I have ever professed my love for our bathtub.  Like Mary Poppins, it is practically perfect in every way.  Deep, long, and with that slope at the back for leisurely afternoons and pruned skin.  Heaven!

The rest, however, no thanks.  We’ve lived in this house for thirteen years, and I have never liked it.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good size and fully functional, but it’s so not me.  I’ve done my best with it, sure, but never thought, “Ooh, isn’t it lovely!”  So I waited and waited while more pressing projects grabbed our savings, but now the time has come.  Demolition starts on Wednesday or Thursday!  If I disappear for a bit, that’s why.  I’ve been sucked into a bathroom remodel vortex: painting, decorating, creating, and very likely sweeping up a myriad of dust.  Wish me well…

We spent yesterday afternoon making the house festive, with holiday songs on the hi-fi, candles burning, and the sweet scent of pine and fir wafting about.  Tonight, the hubster and I will be spreading a little holiday cheer with cherished neighbors, and tomorrow I’ll be whooping it up with the ladies.  It’s that time of year…

I hope you and yours are enjoying this beautiful season!

Isn’t it neat how life works out?  You think you are going to do one thing, but for some reason it doesn’t happen, and there you are doing something better.  That was our Sunday.  We got up and moving rather leisurely with the intention of walking to get the hubster’s hair cut.  However, once we found the coupon we were to use (our household is quite thrifty) and realized it wasn’t a walking distance affair, we had a change of plan.

Still determined to walk, we set out in a different direction and collected the greens for this year’s holiday mantel and window.  Though I was a bit worried about finding enough, there was plenty.  There always is.  Then we came home and decorated, taking in the heady scent of evergreen.  If Christmas has a scent, that is it for me.  Wonderful.   New additions include the diamond church (Gregory’s name for the sparkle) and the tall white house.  It is simple and pretty and a bit of a hodge podge, but I like it just the same.  The hubster thinks it’s pretty neat, too, especially since we have one small box of decorations and use what nature provides on a fun walk, together.  He is also quite fond of the fact that the greens go right into the fireplace when we’re done, filling the house with the scent of the holidays one last time.

This last shot is for my Dad.  When I lived at home, and all the decorating was done, he would turn off the lights.  We’d sit quietly in the glow of the tree and admire the beauty of it all.  Shh…
